Q: What is Kyphosis?
A: When looking at a person side on, a kyphotic curve appears like a “C” shape on the persons spine, facing forwards. Often the user can be in severe discomfort due to the limited contact with the backrest and it can put areas of the skin at higher risk of skin breakdown/pressure sores.
Q: What can make Kyphosis worse?
A: When the inappropriate seating or wheelchair is in place this can make the C shape spine become more pronounced which leads to many issues such as breathing, digestion and interaction of the user with people around them as there head tends to be facing forwards and downwards. Gravity will have a significant effect on this position in a negative way.
Q: What can help Kyphosis?
A: Areas to look at to help Kyphosis are things like
- A backrest to shape to the contours of the users back to spread the contact areas and reduce the risk of pressure damage on the spine/prominent areas
- Tilt in space can often work against/reduce the affects of gravity
- Partly accommodating the position through effect pelvic position and hip angle and then regularly reviewing the seating will also help
